The 8 Levels of Financial Independence
Financial independence isn't a single finish line, it's a ladder. Here's the climb, and roughly what each rung feels like.
Dependence
You rely on others or debt to cover expenses. The starting line for almost everyone.
Solvency
You can meet your own obligations on time without help. You are officially in the black.
Stability
You have a starter emergency fund and have knocked out high-interest debt. Setbacks no longer sink you.
Debt Freedom
No consumer debt (mortgage optional). Your income is finally yours to deploy.
Coasting FI
Your invested assets will grow into full retirement on their own. You only need to cover today.
Security
Your investments could cover your basic essential expenses forever. Work becomes optional-ish.
Independence
Your portfolio covers your full current lifestyle. This is the classic FIRE number.
Abundance
You have more than you need. The question shifts from "enough?" to "what for?"
